How the School Page program works

Selling the advertising space
|
Our unique School Page concept involves students producing their own page in a weekday issue of the Mercury. This includes writing the news stories, taking the photographs, doing some of the art work, selling the advertising space and generally marketing the project in their local community. The Mercury's education services section coordinates a program of classroom workshops from early in first term with the pages progressively produced and published throughout the year.
Journalist and NIE coordinator Damian Bester is a big fan of the School Page program as it served as his introduction to the world of newspapers. "As a student at Elizabeth College I participated in an earlier version of the School Page program and two years later I was a Cadet Journalist at the Mercury," Damian said. "It was, and is, a realistic introduction to the business of newspapers. It is a real student enterprise with tangible results for all to see."
Advertising facilitator for the program, Peter Carey, said the exercise represented a valuable experience for students. This included gaining insight into the print media, developing skills in ownership and teamwork, "and at all times being motivated by the personal satisfaction of publishing their work in a daily metropolitan newspaper with a readership in excess of 100,000."
The Mercury Newspapers in Education section promotes the professional development potential of the program and would like to hear from teachers interested in developing a school page with their classes. A booklet with details on how to get involved in a School Page project is available on request from the Newspapers in Education office. To inquire about the program, simply send us an email.

The Mercury Print Museum
Tasmania's printing heritage is the focus of the special museum developed in Hobarts historic Ingle Hall. The museum was developed by the Mercury in its 1814 Georgian building, which adjoins the company's main office. The building is regarded as one of Australia's finest examples of Georgian architecture from the 19th century to have survived almost intact.
The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery assisted the newspaper in creating the specialised museum, highlighted by a series of interpretive displays and exhibits. These cover the history of early printing in Tasmania, the development of the Mercury from 1854 to today, and the evolution of 19th and 20th century printing.
Displays range from a collection of early printing memorabilia covering the development of "hot metal" type through to today's computer-based typesetting techniques. There is a strong educational focus as the museum traces the development of printing through actual historical objects and images, as well as visual and oral presentations.
