Meet the Averages
This article could be the starting point for a discussion of average, particularly with older students. Since the report is based on data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics it would be possible to obtain the data and check the results. Although the report does not state which of the usual measures of average-mean, median or mode - was used for each of the claims made, it is possible to speculate on some. For categorical or two-state variables, the mode would have been used. For others the mean or median is more likely. For some of the variables, e.g., measured in hours, it would be possible to construct side-by-side bar graphs to compare Ms and Mr Average. The conversion of minutes to decimal parts of hours is a nice numeracy exercise before plotting values.
