Calvin and Hobbes - Average TV viewing

This cartoon provides an excellent starting point for a discussion on average. Students can discuss how this average of 7.5 hours might have been calculated. Would they expect every household to watch exactly 7.5 hours? This could be the motivation to do a class (or school) survey on how many hours of TV are watched in the children's households. They need to think about whether they would collect data for each student for one day or several days. They might also consider the variation in the data as well as the average value.
