This article can be used to discuss several aspects of data handling. The results are reported in terms of "burglaries per 100 homes insured" rather than "percentage of homes insured". Students might discuss whether there is any difference in how they might perceive the two representations. Might there be a difference for home owners?
The rates for the top ten suburbs could be graphed in various ways to show the relationship between the top ten suburbs. What scale might be chosen to make Annerley look much worse than New Town?
Various aspects of the survey design could be discussed by students who are planning their own surveys, either in mathematics or social science classes.
