On the surface, this article presents two examples of the average as arithmetic mean.
For senior students, particularly those in New South Wales, it may be of interest to discuss whether the difference in the averages for girls and boys of 8.15 points is statistically significant or not. To do this the number of students and the standard deviations of the two data sets are needed. These would be available from the NSW Board of Studies if students wanted to base a project on the article.
In a social science class studying gender difference there would be great scope for discussion about why the difference favours girls and why it might be widening.
