It is interesting to compare the graphical representation in this article with one which appeared on the same day based on the same report in a different newspaper (Where the money goes). One concentrates on food while the other looks more broadly at spending. Students should discuss which is more striking, easier to interpret, or gives a more complete picture of spending. Students might also compare the two headlines - how can they be so different based on the same report (this is a nice topic for a Media Studies class).
Students can create bar or pie graphs to represent the data in the four categories shown in the table. Quite a few basic numeracy questions can be based on this article.
