Calvin and Hobbes - Average bath time
This is a wonderful cartoon using the idea of average. It brings to mind a primary school level book available in Australia by Rod Clement titled "Counting on Frank" (published by Angus and Robertson). In that book a boy makes similar estimates about the number of peas he has eaten in 8 years, how many times his dog would fit in his bedroom and how many jelly beans fit in an average lolly jar. The book, and this cartoon, provide a context within which students, particularly at the upper primary level, can carry out their own calculations to check the estimates given. It could be an interesting class activity to ask students to estimate the average time they spend in the bath or shower each year.
