New pay rises for our pollies

The main feature of interest in the bar chart in this article is the scale used on the left axis. It appears at a quick glance that allowances are much more than basic salaries. For which of the categories is this actually true? The relative salaries of the backbencher, minister and premier are also exaggerated by the scale used. It would be a good exercise for students to actually calculate the relative factors in the salaries and discuss ways of visually presenting the information which might give a better picture of the situation. As it stands the backbencher appears much less well paid than the others. Is this the actual situation?

Another bar chart using a similar scale to compare Tasmanian MPs' salaries with those of MPs in other states is shown in, Basic Parliamentary Salaries.
