It is of interest to interpret the meaning of the first sentence in the light of the seventh paragraph. As well understanding of percentages can be checked using that paragraph.
It is difficult to interpret some of the growth percentages since sometimes the year for comparison is not stated. Although the missing references are probably to 1971, the reporter should have been more precise.
The use of the terms "average" and "median" can be highlighted as "average" does not seem to be used in a technical sense but "median" does. The importance of using median in the context of data which can have very large values at one extreme is worth discussing.
