by David Stockdale A slashing century by Allister de Winter yester- day denied the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Assoc- iation victory over the TCA in a thriller at New Town. Set a target of 193 in 46 overs, the VSDCA nearly lost the game with four run -outs to finish two runs shy at 9-190. De Winter blasted 133 off only 192 balls with 14 fours and three sixes out of a total of 192. What made his innings all the more remark- able was that he was the only TCA batsman to reach double figures and he achieved it on a green-top wicket which favoured the pacemen through- out the three days. After de Winter, the next high- est scorers were Michael DiVenuto with nine and Greg Camp- bell with eight. The powerfully- built former state all-rounder dominated a last-wicket stand with captain Peter McPhee which produced an invaluable 65 runs in 68 minutes. Former Victorian paceman Len Balcam was the destroyer with 6-71 from 22.2 overs. Balcam was well supported by his new- ball partner Darryl Mohr, who took 3-51 from 22 overs. Graham Matthews (32) and Don Rixon (22) gave the VSDCA a fine start in quest of its winning target by putting on an opening stand of 62. Geoff Van Vugt (48) and Bryan Harper (36) built on that with a fourth-wicket partnership of 50. But after seemingly having the game in the bag at 4-181, the Victorians hit the panic button to lose their next five wickets for just eight runs. Requiring six off the last over from Ian Connell, they lost three wickets. Skipper Geoff Richardson (20) was caught in the covers off the first ball, and Balcam and David Knight were both run out for ducks off the second and fourth balls respectively. Connell (2-52) and McPhee (2-55) were the most success- ful TCA bowlers. McPhee finished with match figures of 8-106 to enhance his chances of a recall to the state side.
